Clarence and I grew up on farms only a few miles from each other in Champaign County. We dated in high school through college, marrying in 1972. I graduated college (EIU) majoring in music education and started teaching at Neoga Grade School. That didn't go so well, so when Clarence graduated in 1973, we moved back to the Champaign area and I got a job with Prudential Insurance Company where I learned about life insurance. From there I took a position in the property/casualty claims office of Indiana Insurance learning the ins and outs of the property/casualty business. We moved back to Charleston in 1977 and started Clarence Miller Insurance. I have worked here since 1979 in every capacity but my main position now is bookkeeping.
We have two daughters. Emily graduated from EIU with degrees in Spanish and French. She married Paul Tomshack, who joined our agency in 2012. Emily works part time at the Charleston Public Library. They have Emma, our 4 year old granddaughter and Lucas, our 2 year old grandson. I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my grandchildren. Our other daughter, Sarah, graduated from Illinois State University with degrees in Graphic Design and Photography. She currently works at world-renowned technology company Wolfram Research in Champaign. I love working in the business and especially being a small business owner. I read a lot, like to swim, especially love to travel and am still active with music playing keyboard in our local church's praise band.
